Best place for coffee and outside seating On an unusually warm Saturday morning, I came to realize that Cafe Gutenberg may just be the best place for coffee and outside dining in Richmond. On top of the fantastic company I was enjoying; the food was (as always) delicious and unique and the coffee (Illy) was perfect as we sat outside and soaked up the sights and sounds of the Bottom. Nestled perfectly at 17th and Main, Cafe Gutenberg offers a tranquil stop on an otherwise busy and loud intersection. Although the staff had not set up patio seating yet, when asked they were very accomodating and prompt to indulge our request. In the blink of an eye, however, the entire patio was full and vibrant with other patrons eager to enjoy their Saturday in similar fashion. With the sun shining bright, the fantastic people watching, Farmers Market next door, cars passing, trains in the distance and the buzz of conversations around us, it was easy to get lost in the moment of finding the perfect place to sit and enjoy the day. Cafe Gutenberg itself (without the patio) is a fantastic space that offers a cozy and welcoming environment, whether you are meeting friends for lunch, getting work done or simply in need of a space to chill. The upstairs offers the relaxing aura of a library coupled with huge windows that keep it airy and bright. The cafe is always bustling and busy, but maintains it’s relaxed atmosphere perfectly.
Another highlight is Winedown Wednesdays, from 5 til close. Glasses of wine are half price.
There’s a rumor that we may not have this wonderful spot to enjoy much longer....I hope that’s simply a rumor, it would be a shame to lose such a treasure as Cafe Gutenberg’s patio and ambience.

That bites! It is such a neat little spot there in the Bottom. I hope that something similar takes its place or that someone buys it. I’d hate for it to be another one of those tacky clubs. posted by lellington |
